SUMMARY:Sustainability Now Screening of Here’s the Story: The Green Amendment
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the film Here’s The Story: The Green Amendment\, hosted by Sustainability Now. \nRegister here to attend. \nThursday\, September 3\, 2020\, 7:00pm to 8:30pm ET \nHere’s The Story is an Emmy nominated show\, produced by New Jersey’s acclaimed journalist Steve Rogers. In the two part episode\, Rogers follows Maya van Rossum\, founder of Green Amendments For The Generations\, as she travels across New Jersey exploring why a Green Amendment is needed and how it can protect all people regardless of race\, ethnicity\, religion or income. The two part special features interviews with Governor Murphy\, Trenton Mayor Guscior and environmental justice leaders from across the state. \nAs outlined in the show\, a Green Amendment will greatly enhance the tools available to communities of color\, indigenous and low-income communities to remedy current environmental threats they face. It also provides the opportunity to push back against further devastation by granting a fundamental human right that asserts no person should suffer disproportionate environmental\, health and quality of life burdens because of who they are\, the color of their skin\, their ethnicity\, their income\, or where they live.

SUMMARY:“A Green Amendment for Pennsylvania & the Nation” with Maya van Rossum and Franklin Kury
DESCRIPTION:The Story of Pennsylvania’s Article 1 Section 27 and the Promise of the Green Amendment \nIn the decades long fight for a cleaner environment\, we’ve been fighting a losing battle. The sad truth is\, our laws are designed to accommodate pollution rather than prevent it. People feel powerless when it comes to preserving the quality of their water\, air\, public parks\, and special natural spaces. But there is a hopeful solution that could change future of environmentalism—bypass the laws that are currently failing us and turn to the ultimate authority instead: our state and federal constitutions. \nIn this very special event\, Gettysburg College welcomes for their Environmental Studies Annual Lecture\, former Deputy Attorney General and Pennsylvania State House Representative\, Franklin Kury and Maya van Rossum\, founder and leader of the Green Amendment Movement for an in depth look at the history of Pennsylvania’s very own Environmental Rights Amendment\, its status in today’s context\, and its future in every state across America. \nThis event is sponsored by the Department of Environmental Studies\, EPACC\, the Eisenhower Institute\, the Department of Public Policy\, and the Department of Political Science of Gettysburg College. \nThis event is OPEN to the public. \nWhen:\nThursday\, February 27\, 2020\, 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm\nWhere:\nGettysburg College\nRoom 200\, Science Center\n300 N Washington St\nGettysburg\, PA 17325

The sad truth is\, our laws are designed to accommodate pollution rather than prevent it. People feel powerless when it comes to preserving the quality of their water\, air\, public parks\, and special natural spaces. \n\nThe solution\, argues Delaware Riverkeeper Maya K. van Rossum in a pathbreaking book\, is to bypass the laws and turn to the ultimate authority: our state and federal constitutions. In 2013\, van Rossum and her team won a watershed legal victory that not only protected Pennsylvania communities from ruthless frackers\, but affirmed the constitutional right of people in the state to a clean and healthy environment. \nFollowing this victory\, van Rossum inaugurated the Green Amendment movement\, dedicated to empowering every American community to mobilize for constitutional change. In The Green Amendment\, van Rossum lays out an inspiring new agenda for environmental advocacy\, one that will finally empower people. \nWe all have the right to pure water\, clean air\, and a healthy environment. It’s time to claim that right—for our own sake and that of future generations. \nThe Green Amendment has been honored as a 2018 Living Now Evergreen Awards GOLD Winner in the Nature Conservation category\, received an Honorable Mention in the 2017 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards\, and includes a powerful foreword authored by Mark Ruffalo\, which supports the visionary constitutional path advocated for in the book. \nPurchase a copy of The Green Amendment here. \nAbout the Author:\nMaya K. van Rossum is the Delaware Riverkeeper and leader for the Delaware Riverkeeper Network.  The Delaware Riverkeeper Network works throughout the four states of the Delaware River watershed (NY\, NJ\, PA & DE) and at the national level using advocacy\, science and litigation. van Rossum\, who is skilled as an environmental attorney\, strategist\, community organizer\, facilitator\, coalition builder and manager\, has led DRN for over 23 years.
